Buy a Uke From a Guitar Maker?

I’ve been told by several “experts” that (with the exception of Martin), guitar makers can’t make good ukes. “They might make decent guitars, that’s got nothing to do with ukuleles”, they said, etc.

I’d bought a few guitars from the Orangewood Guitar company in the past, and loved them … so I bought a Ukulele from them, The Harper Tenor. Inexpensive, great for a beginner such as myself – and it turned out to be one of my favorites (still is).

The Harper Tenor from Orangewood Guitars

The Setup was superb! Intonation, Tone, overall sound and Play-ability fantastic. I loved it. So much so that I ordered the “deluxe” version, the Juno Tenor with EQ and Pickup built in.

Aside from the excellent sound, they are both (physically) beautiful. I’ve taken them to Open Mic events, everybody wants to know about them, everybody to whom I show loves playing them.

These ukes are inexpensive, and good! Gig bag is included, shipping is free and they thoughtfully include an accessory kit with every ukulele. You get a Chromatic Tuner, Strap and Chord Chart in the box.

Bottom Line: I think you can buy a uke from a Guitar maker and get an excellent instrument that you’ll love (and others will too). I’ve also got a couple from Alvarez, and two from Cordoba Guitars, all of which I love.
